Baseball evolved from older bat-and-ball games already being played in England by the mid-18th century. This game was brought by immigrants to North America, where the modern version developed. By the late 19th century, baseball was widely recognized as the national sport of the United States. While the exact origins of baseball are unknown, most historians agree that it is based on the English game of rounders. It began to become quote popular in this country in the early 19th century, and many sources report the growing popularity of a game called “townball”, “base”, or “baseball”.

The year 1869 marked the first time that a baseball team turned professional. The Cincinnati Red Stockings are widely considered as the first professional baseball team. Eleven other teams turned professional that same year The Cincinnati Red Stockings led the 1869 inaugural season 19-0 but the year’s pennant went to the Brooklyn Atlantics who posted a 15 to 6 record.
